The dynamics of Human bio- physiology are a beautifully orchestrated symphony of balance and counter balance. To appreciate this inter-relationship of dynamic systems, one simply has to look to the human interplay with our environment. Plants take in carbon dioxide and give off Oxygen as a waste product of their metabolism. Humans take in that life giving Oxygen and give off carbon Dioxide as a waste product of their metabolism. Humans have Blood that transports nutrients to the Bodies various cells and cellular systems. Plants have Chlorophyll that circulates through plant cellular structures and supplies life to vegetation. The Chemical composition of sea water that supplies nourishment to all life in the world’s oceans, both plant and animal, is 98% similar to the composition of Human Blood. These comparisons are simple and obvious and one might ask “So, what has this got to do with the dynamics of human bio- physiology.” The answer is that when we take the deep dive into the inter-workings of the human organism, we tend to set asides the reality that we are but one piece of a synergistic whole when it comes to life on earth. And the concept of “balance and counter balance”, Yin and Yang if you will, is the guiding principle for all life. This realization sets the stage for a full appreciation that Human biophysiology functions in a world of balance and counter balance from the whole organism and its’ interplay with its’ external physical environment down to the very cellular structures and genetic material that make up that organism and its’ internal physical environment. This appreciation will help us to understand not only how we function, but how we pay a price when we fail to live in harmony with the principle of balance.
A brilliant work titled “Constitutional Inadequacies” by Pende, Naccarati and Draper takes the reader into the various cellular and organ systems of the body and establishes how we develop according to a blueprint of immaculate design and how each one of us deviates from that design and thus creates our own individual bio- physical existence. They point to ways that we develop, to set the stage over our lifetime, to predispose ourselves to inherent disease pathologies. The work was written long before the tragic decimation of our environment and food supply and before the decoding of the human genome, so they could only point to the basics and speculate about genetic influence. The quick fix formulas of the Pharmaceutical industry side tracked meaningful mainstream research, so that 28 years later in 1956, Dr. Roger J Williams, Biochemist and Co Founder of the Clayton Foundation Biochemical Institute at the University of Texas at Austin, authored the book “Biochemical Individuality- The Basis for the Genetotrophic Concept”. The Preface begins “The writing of this book is based upon the need in human biology and medicine for more attention to variability and individuality at the physiological and biochemical level.” He goes on to admonish that little time has been devoted to the study of the implications of variability between people and he draws conclusions that point to a genetic connection to disease states. He calls this the “Genetotrophic Concept”. It was a “concept” because until the decoding of the human genome, we could not look at the definitive genetic interplay that predisposed us to our individual physical constitution, let alone the influence of life style and nutritional influences on the genetic connection to disease. During the time that the medical profession largely ignored, and pioneers like Dr. Williams diligently pursued, the connection of genetics to disease pathology, much was being accomplished by other dedicated professionals and non professionals, in the realm of nutrition and environmental influences on disease. A classic work by Dr. Weston Price, M.S, D.D.S., F.A.C.D., entitled “Nutrition And Physical Degeneration- A Comparison of Primitive and Modern Diets and Their Effects” was published in 1945. A passage in the Forward of that book, written by Grandville F Knight states: “A simple definition of ecology is the relationship of man, beast, fish, fowl, vegetation and all forms of life to each other, to the living soil, and to the total environment.” Chapter one begs the question “Why Seek Wisdom From The Primitive Peoples?” On page 5 he expresses “The purpose is to glean data that will be applicable for use in correcting certain tragic expressions of our modern degeneration… These data will be useful in reducing race decay, general physical degeneration, and facial and dental deformities, and character changes.” Yes, Dr. Price recognized that the further we get from a symbiotic relationship with our environment, the more “civilized” we become, the greater the degree of degeneration, including mental degeneration. And yet he points out “… the way back is indicated. Like the successful primitive racial stocks, we, too, can make, as a first requisite, provision for adequate nutrition both for generation and growth…”. A sentiment echoed in the work of Melvin Page, DDs in his book “Degeneration- Regeneration”. So basic was the relationship of human health to the environment, that Dr. Price observed the primitive peoples he worked with in South America, would take clay soil from a bag and mix it into water they would drink, from pools they found when hunting. Upon investigation he learned that the Clay would render the water drinkable, eliminating bacteria from the stagnant pools and sparing the people illnesses that would otherwise consume them. In 1956 another nutrition pioneer, Victor Earl Irons, was charged by the FDA with selling “misbranded drugs” and sentenced to 6 years in prison. One of the “drugs” this man introduced was a colloidal clay solution from volcanic montmorilinite, (similar to Dr Prices clay discovery), in a base of de-mineralized water, for the purpose of intestinal detoxification. Mr. Irons had previously been diagnosed with and “incurable” disease at age 40. He lived to be 98 and died of complications from a car accident. He fathered children at the age of 80. He firmly believed that if the blood was properly nourished and was kept clean of toxic waste, good health would always be present. He was a living testimony to that belief. His use of Wheat Grass juice for nourishment and the intestinal detoxification afforded by the clay solution, gave Mr. Irons 58 more years of vibrant healthy life after he was told at 40 that he would live only a little while longer, existing in a miserable degenerating body.
The end result of appropriate application of the principles of human bio-physiology is good health. They are inextricably connected. The end result of violating the principles of human bio-physiology is disease and degeneration. The link is certain. The study of human bio-physiology will incorporate an understanding of 5 interacting paradigms of health:
Metabolic Balance
Genetic influence and constitutional individuality
The role of Nutrition in biochemistry
The relationship of detoxification and immunity
The anabolic influence of exercise versus the catabolic destruction of disease
While this sounds like a lot to digest (no pun intended), it is quite simply the understanding of who we are and our relationship to our environment. The earth is about 75% covered with water and it is no coincidence that our bodies are comprised of about 75% water. And nowhere in our environment do we find pharmaceutical drugs naturally occurring, so is it surprising that they are not required by the body for healthy living? They are instead, a substitute for healthy living. It doesn’t matter whether your drug dealer wears a panama hat, suede shoes and drives a low rider Cadillac, or whether he wears a white smock, a stethoscope and scribbles his name on a prescription. He is still a drug dealer and your reliance on symptom relief stands in the way of your taking control of your current and future state of health. Isn’t it time you came to know who you are? Isn’t it time you took control of your life? Isn’t it time you understood your Human bio-physiology?
We will attempt to explain the 5 paradigms of Human bio-physiology listed above. We understand that information in each area is ongoing and developing daily. New information will be added as it becomes available, but the fundamentals are soundly established. A general picture will develop that will make sense as you see the interplay of each subject to the others and to the human organism as a whole. You will begin to see, possibly for the first time, the relationship of disease to the violation of the principles of human bio-physiology. You will also come to know how adhering to those principles is the only way to the result of a state of good health.
